The Future Up Close: EpirusXRCenter & IEEE SB UOI Arta at the 1st AI & Robotics Hackathon in Preveza

There are moments when technology ceases to be merely a tool—and becomes a source of inspiration. When knowledge breaks free from the pages of books and transforms into creativity, collaboration, and vision. We experienced such a moment on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at the 1st Model High School of Preveza with LT, as part of EU Code Week, where the 1st AI & Robotics Hackathon took place under the theme “Innovating for Our City.”

The EpirusXRCenter and the IEEE Student Branch at the University of Ioannina Arta were honored to play an active role in this unique educational experience, actively supporting the new generation of creators, innovators, and visionaries.

41 students, both current and former members of the Computer Science Club, formed eight teams and, within a few hours, achieved something beyond their years: turning ideas into solutions for society. Using sensors, code, and creativity, they designed applications that “address” real-world needs from smart irrigation and environmental monitoring systems to innovative approaches to tourism, road safety, and public infrastructure management.

On this journey, the EpirusXRCenter team stood by the students not merely as a supporter, but as a companion. Through a high-quality, hands-on VR workshop, participants had the opportunity to experience firsthand the potential of immersive technologies, to experiment, and to imagine new ways of interacting with the world around them.

The contribution of the team members was decisive, not only in terms of technical expertise, but primarily as role models for the students, conveying values, ethics, and a passion for science and innovation. Likewise, the support provided by the Judging Panel further strengthened the connection between the educational process and the academic and research community, highlighting the importance of evaluating not only technical excellence but also the social value of ideas.

The collaboration between the school and the EpirusXRCenter, under the Cooperation Protocol with HCILAB of the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications at the University of Ioannina, demonstrates that when education meets research, opportunities are created that transcend the boundaries of the classroom. This is not merely a collaboration but a living bridge connecting students’ imagination with the tools of tomorrow.

Through its participation in this initiative, the IEEE Student Branch at the University of Ioannina | Arta continues to invest in the dissemination of technological knowledge and innovation, supporting initiatives that foster 21st-century skills and promote collaboration, creativity, and real-world problem-solving.

What stood out, however, was not just the ideas. It was the look in the children’s eyes. The confidence with which they presented their projects. Their collaboration. Their mutual support. There, in a room bursting with energy, it became clear that the future isn’t something far off.

It’s already here. And it’s being created… by them.

Because in the end, as was whispered at the close of the day:
“Teamwork makes the dream work.”
