Breast Cancer Awareness Month | Prevention, Accessibility & Human-Centred AI

As part of the European project UNICA—Unified Network for International Cancer Advancement, in which the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory of the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications at the University of Ioannina is participating, the importance of prevention, equitable access to screening, and the meaningful involvement of patients in the design of new health technologies.


In an interview with Ms. Angeliki Tsirogianni, President of the Arta Association of Cancer Patients and Friends “Close Friends,” the real challenges that can limit access to preventive screening were discussed, particularly in regional and remote areas.


Particular emphasis was also placed on the use of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare and on the conditions necessary to build patient trust: human oversight, transparency, personal data protection, and patient involvement from the earliest stages of design.


For HCILAB, human-centered development of digital technologies is a fundamental prerequisite for creating solutions that are not only innovative but also truly accessible, reliable, and useful to society.
