On Sunday, September 27, 2026, a volunteer cleanup and maintenance event was held in the outdoor areas surrounding Amphitheater A of the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications at the University of Ioannina.

Faculty members, doctoral candidates, undergraduate students, and members of the IEEE Student Branch at the University of Ioannina–Arta participated in the event as part of a joint effort to improve and care for the university environment.

This initiative was based on a simple idea: the University is a space we share every day, and every small act of care can contribute to creating a more beautiful, functional, and pleasant environment for everyone.

Such volunteer activities are supplementary in nature and do not replace the care and procedures established for the maintenance of university facilities. However, they are a wonderful way to engage the academic community and strengthen collaboration among people of different ranks and roles.

This specific initiative marks the beginning of a new series of initiatives aimed at carrying out similar projects and activities that will positively contribute to the University’s daily life.

The goal is to foster a lasting culture of participation, collaboration, and volunteerism, through actions that will bring students, researchers, and faculty closer together and highlight the power of collective effort.

It all started with a simple cleanup effort.

What follows may include many more small initiatives, all with a common goal: a university environment that we will all be happy to use and take care of.
