IEEE Student Branch at the University of Ioannina – Arta and the EpirusXR Center / HCI Lab at the first ARTA Shopping Festival

The IEEE Student Branch at the University of Ioannina–Arta and the EpirusXR Center / HCI Lab participated in the first ARTA Shopping Festival, held on September 24 and 25, 2026, in Arta, a new event for the city that combined the local market, entertainment, education, and citizens’ engagement with modern technologies.

Over the course of the two-day event, the two teams’ booth served as an interactive space for visitors to explore cutting-edge applications and technologies. Visitors had the opportunity to try out Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), learn about applications developed as part of the activities of the EpirusXR Center and the HCI Lab, and interact with innovative educational and entertainment installations.

MinArt drew particular interest; it is an interactive game with an aesthetic and logic reminiscent of the world of Minecraft, offering participants a different approach to creativity and interaction with digital environments. At the same time, drone applications and demonstrations were presented, along with additional technology-related activities that gave the public the opportunity to experience firsthand different aspects of modern technology.

The booth was visited by many schools and students, who had the opportunity to try out the applications, talk with team members, and learn about the capabilities of VR, AR, and interactive systems. At the same time, throughout the morning and afternoon hours, there was also a significant turnout of people of all ages, who actively participated in the demonstrations and activities.

Participation in the ARTA Shopping Festival provided yet another opportunity for the IEEE Student Branch at the University of Ioannina – Arta, the EpirusXR Center, and the HCI Lab to bring technology out of the lab and closer to the local community, with a particular emphasis on hands-on experiences, education, and familiarizing the public with new digital technologies.

The teams’ participation in this new initiative also highlighted the importance of connecting the University, research, and student activities with the city and its people.

We would like to extend our warmest thanks to the Municipality of Arta and the ADAE OTA for organizing the event, for their cooperation, and for giving us the opportunity to participate in this new initiative for the city, as well as to everyone who contributed to the successful realization of the ARTA Shopping Festival.

We would also like to extend special thanks to the students, teachers, and all the citizens who visited our booth, participated in the activities, and shared with us their interest and enthusiasm for technology and innovation.
